Polymers designed to stabilize proteins exploit direct interactions or crowding, but mechanisms underlying increased stability or reduced aggregation are rarely established. Alginate is widely used to encapsulate proteins for drug delivery and tissue regeneration despite limited knowledge of its impact on protein stability.
