Orthotospoviruses are acquired by thrips during feeding on infected tissue. Virions travel through the foregut and enter midgut epithelial cells through the interaction between the viral glycoproteins and cellular receptors. Glycoprotein RGD motifs and N-linked glycosylation sites have been predicted to mediate receptor binding or play important roles in virus entry into host cells, yet their function needs to be validated.
