Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) form part of the innate immune response, which is of vital importance in fish, especially in eggs and early larval stages. Compared to antibiotics, AMPs show action against a wider spectrum of pathogens, including viruses, fungi and parasites, are more friendly to the environment, and do not seem to generate resistance in bacteria.
